Mepkin Abbey, founded in 1949, on the lands once part of Mepkin Plantation (circa 1681), affords the visitor a look into the life of an authentic abbey, as well as the history of the plantation. The Luce family, former editor & publisher of Time & Life Magazines; are listed among the prominent past owners of Mepkin Plantation. It was the Luce family that bequeathed, part of the Plantation’s lands, to the Roman Catholic Bishop of Charleston. Today (this tract of land) is known as Our Lady of Mepkin Abbey; where the monks of the Trappist order have lived, worked, and worshipped for more than a quarter of a century. This tour also includes the 400+ year old grounds and garden of the original Plantation, as well as the opportunity to view the monastery and observe the daily life, of the monks that reside there. Then it’s on to lunch at a local’s favorite, ”The Barony House”. After lunch, your journey takes you to Cypress Gardens; located on the grounds of the historic Dean Hall Rice Plantation (circa 1725). The gardens (created in 1927) by Benjamin R. Kittredge, allows the visitor to see and experience the natural beauty of an authentic cypress forest. Cypress Gardens has been a natural backdrop for many Hollywood movies, none other than The Patriot, The Notebook and North & South. A visit to the Garden’s Butterfly Pavilion, its History Museum, its Swamparium Exhibit, and the Plantation’s Zoo (featuring animals indigenous to the South Carolina Lowcountry) will round out the day’s adventure.
